Outside of the ‘to hyphenate, or not to hyphenate’ quandary, the semicolon is the punctuation mark I see people struggling with the most. One of the problems, I think, is that when people do try getting to grips with it, they find many texts and on-line guides to be overly lengthy and verbose. The very best intentions can easily be quashed by a dense document.
With this in mind, I thought I’d share with you one of the simplest and clearest explanations of semicolon usage that I’ve found. It’s written in plain English, and is refreshingly concise. This can often be a rarity on both counts!
